Tanks for Peace

​In 1991, President Gorbachev sent a delegation to review Thoe's proposal for a bridge made of tanks on the German-Polish border. The bridge was intended as an alternative to destroying 40,000 tanks, as required by the CFE Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces, an agreement signed by 28 nations. Building a bridge from these tanks as a monument to the end of the Cold War would cut the cost of destroying them in half. The following year, Thoe was invited by Gorbachev to Moscow, where he presented the project in the Duma.
